The McKinsey Global Public Policy Forum is jointly sponsored by McKinsey & Company and the Master of Global Public Policy (MGPP) Program at RANEPA. It brings together experts from McKinsey and from the world of professional public policy (government, think-tanks, international organizations, universities) to share ideas on the most urgent global issues. The Forum is held entirely in English.

This panel will examine the current state of venture capital and the startup environment in Russia and its potential for stimulating innovation and economic development.  The first section of the program will feature a discussion by analysts and investors as to the overall trends, opportunities, and challenges in the Russian VC scene, while the second section will consist of short talks by a handful of the top new Russian startup entrepreneurs: these will be condensed versions of a full product presentation, in effect “mini-pitches.”  The aim is to give the audience exposure to the texture of Russian innovation at both the macro and micro levels—and to offer a chance to engage with and challenge the panelists in a productive fashion.

Among the topics for discussion will be:

-- What are the global trends in VC and in cross-border investment?  How competitive are Russian startups and how can they be more competitive in the future?

-- Startups vs. mature companies: how do their strategies and prospects differ?

-- What can and should the RF Government do to stimulate the VC/startup sector?

-- What constraints do startup entrepreneurs find most counter-productive and what solutions do they propose?
